1/366: Frozen moat

1/366: Frozen moat, originally uploaded by rodia.

The frozen moat around the Pilsudski Fort. The fort is now deserted, and no one really knows what will be done with it- some say investors are looking into building something there, but the fort, though in decay, is technically under protection as a heritage site. It was built in the 1880s by order of the Russian Tsar as part of a series of fortifications around Warsaw. It was then called the Fort Tsche.

After the wars, the terrain was filled with plot gardens, but the owners have been recently evicted by the army, who owns the site. Their sheds and gardens are in ruins, as no one guards the fort anymore, so vandals have free reign over it.

I took this photo from the bridge, which is one of the oldest drawbridges in Warsaw.
